Hathi Trust

HathiTrust Digital Library is a digital searchable repository for public domain and in copyright books and materials from a variety of sources, including Google, the Internet Archive, Microsoft, and universities. Copyrighted material may only be presented as a single page or as a bibliographic reference and some material is only available full text at the partner institution which owns the book or document.

International Children's Library

The International Children's Digital Library's goal is to build a collection of books representing outstanding historical and contemporary books from throughout the world. The books are for children from three to thirteen, are in a wide variety of languages, and include both fiction and nonfiction.

Internet Archive

Internet Archive is a non-profit library of free books, movies, software, audiobooks, digitized documents, music, websites, and more.

JURN

JURN is a multidisciplinary index for open access articles, including subjects such as ecology, nature, palaeontology, business, law, economics and other sciences.

LibriVox

Unite for Literacy

Unite for Literacy is an organization which works to provide books for children in areas where books may not be readily available. They work with nonprofit partners such as zoos to get books which are high interest, illustrated and easy to read. Narration is available in a wide variety of languages including Spanish and Chinese.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration

DK Find Out

DK is a publishing company which produces illustrated reference books for children. Their website contains a searchable encyclopedia for children. Teachers can sign up for lesson plans, worksheets, and other tools to be used with the website and reference books.

Edutopia

Edutopia contains articles and videos to help teachers implement project-based learning, social and emotional learning, comprehensive assessment, teacher development, integrated studies, and technology integration.

ERIC

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the ERIC database contains article citations and full text educational materials from 1966 to the present. Journal articles, reports, documents, and more are included. A thesaurus allows the user to browse the database by subject; keyword searching and personalized features are available as well.

America's Story from America's Library

The Library of Congress’s website which contains an overview of the history of the United States of America. Histories of the individual states, famous Americans, and popular culture are provided.

Education Resources from the Library of Congress

Includes a variety of resources for students and lifelong learners. Resources for teachers include classroom materials, lesson plans, primary source sets and professional development. Classroom materials can be searched by standard (Common Core, State Content, Organizations).

National Archives Educator Resources

Find information on professional development, distance learning programs, teaching with records of Congress, National History Day resources, learning resources based on primary sources and more. Access DocsTeach, an online tool for teaching with primary source documents. Includes teaching activities and the ability to create your own interactive learning activities.

New York State Museum: Education

PBS LearningMedia New York

Smithsonian Educators Search

Genealogy

Ancestry Library

Several New York repositories have formed a partnership with Ancestry.com to digitize family history records and make them available online for free to New York State residents. The list of records available is located in the bottom left corner of the Ancestry.com New York web page. Descriptions of the records as well as the holding organizations are provided through the links and logos on the page.

Access requires a free Ancestry.com New York account. First-time users should visit the page and enter their zip code to get started.

Ellis Island Passenger Records

Site contains a search engine for searching the Ellis Island database of passengers arriving in New York 1892-1924. Initial information includes name, residence, arrival date and age at arrival. Free registration allows access to the full record for passengers (name, ethnicity, place of residence, date of arrival, age on arrival, gender, marital status, ship of travel and port of departure). Site also includes information on the immigrant experience.

FamilySearch

Searchable database of the Family History Department of the Church of Latter-day Saints. Includes their Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index and Web sites.

NY GenWeb

This USGenWeb site is organized by county. Also includes New York military links, geography, cemeteries, land records, vital records and more.

Voyages: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database

Includes records of over 35,000 slaving expeditions that took place between 1514 and 1866. The database is searchable but additional variables not shown in the online search can also be downloaded. Results include vessel name, captain’s name, year arrived with slaves, principal region of slave purchase and principal region of slave landing. Summary statistics, tables, custom graphs, timelines, maps and animations are also available.

This searchable site allows users to find information about a physician in New York State. Required information includes doctor’s medical education, translation services at specific offices, and legal actions taken against specific doctors. The data on this Web site is maintained by the New York State Department of Health.

Franklin: FDR Library’s Digital Collections

Provides access to the FDR Library’s document collections and photographs. Document collections include fully digitized collections or series and finding aids to all document collections. Hudson River Valley Heritage

Digital library provides access to selected collections of libraries, archives, museums and historical societies in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester Counties. Collections may be searched or browsed. Collections cover local history, art, libraries, maritime history, genealogical records, and much more. Chronicling America

Produced by the National Digital Newspaper Program, this searchable database contains descriptive information of U.S. newspapers and selected digitized pages. Records cover 1690 to present while digitized pages from over 2300 newspapers currently cover 1789-1925. Search by state, newspaper, date, or keyword.

Digital Collections

Searchable archive has items categorized by subject, Library of Congress division, and original format. Collection includes books/printed material, newspapers, photographs, prints, maps, music, audio recordings, films, manuscripts, and more.

National Jukebox

Contains over 10,000 historical sound recordings from the Victor Talking Machine Company and other Sony-owned labels. Dates currently range from 1900 to 1925 but additional dates will be added. Search by artist, song, lyricist, genre, composer, year or place.

Prints and Photographs Online Catalog

Collection contains catalog records for photographs, prints, drawings, posters, and architectural and engineering drawings held by the Library of Congress. Images are included for 1.2 million items. Search by keyword, subject, title, creator/name or number.

Making of America

Making of America is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from approximately 1850-1877. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection contains approximately 10,000 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints.

National Archives

America's Historical Documents

Provides access to digitized records of the federal government, along with transcripts and supplemental information. Digital Public Library of America

Partnering with many digitization projects such as Empire State Digital Network, New York Public Library, Digital Maine, U.S. GPO, National Archives, the Smithsonian and more, the Digital Public Library of America provides materials such as photographs, books, maps, news footage, oral histories, personal letters, museum objects, artwork, and government documents.

ERIC

FactCheck.org

FactCheck.org is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. The APPC was established by publisher and philanthropist Walter Annenberg to create a community of scholars within the University of Pennsylvania that would address public policy issues at the local, state and federal levels. An online citation generator service provided by the Hekman Library of Calvin College. Formats any given data on a source into a reliable citation, using any one of the three most common citation styles. Free registration allows user to save citations online.

New York State Museum Publications

Cornell Lab of Ornithology

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a nonprofit organization which is involved in studying and protecting birds. The website includes birding guides, bird cams and videos, bird biology, frequently asked questions, general articles, and issues of Living Bird Magazine.

NatureServe Explorer

Database includes information about plants, vertebrate animals, invertebrate animals and ecological units. Records include scientific and common names, conservation status, distribution maps, images for some species, life histories, conservation needs and more.

Public Library of Science

Nonprofit open access science, technology and medicine publisher with a library of open access journals and other scientific literature under an open content license.

SciCentral
