The NOVELny program and its online resources (currently from Gale and Britannica) will cease on June 30, 2024.

This successful NYS Library pilot program, which has provided a variety of databases since 1999, is no longer sustainable with the NYS Library’s current funding sources. The Cultural Education fund has not received any recent increases, staff and database costs are rising, and federal funding has only increased moderately. This has led to the difficult decision to cut the NOVELny program.

Fortunately, we end this program equipped with valuable knowledge that can help transition this service to those who need it. The State Library will continue to work with our library partners to establish relationships with NOVELny vendors so they may continue this service at a regional or local level if they wish.

The NYS Library will continue to support its goals as stated in the New York State Library Services and Technology Act Five-Year Plan (FFY 2023-2027) submitted to the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Provided by the New York State Library, NOVELny is a Statewide Internet Library connecting New Yorkers to 21st century information. NOVELny is supported with Federal Library Service and Technology funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The NOVELny e-resources cost $2,654,778 for 2022-2023 and are supported fully with IMLS funds.

NOVELny is an online virtual library connecting New Yorkers to 21st century information via libraries and library systems statewide. In 2022/23, NOVELny will continue to offer free statewide access to an encyclopedia, strong general reference and periodicals content, issues, business, news and health concentrations, content for secondary school students, and an interface and content for children.

Exciting changes are coming to NOVELny on August 31, 2021!

NOVELny is getting a new look which includes a new logo and a new website. The newly redesigned www.novelnewyork.org site will be solely for access to the databases. All information about the NOVELny program, including the fact sheet, toolkit with logo style guidelines, Help Desk and registration information, and more will be on the State Library’s Division of Library Development page at https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/novelny/.

There will also be a slight change in the NYS Newspapers database. It will be renamed The New York Times and it will only include that publication with both indexing and full text from January 1985 to the present. There will be no change in the Gale OneFile: News database. Any newspapers included in the current NYS Newspapers database will continue to be available in Gale OneFile: News.

All database URLs will remain the same. Links to pages on the current NOVELny page will need to be updated.

If you have any questions about the changes please email the NOVELny Help Desk at NYSLNOVEL@nysed.gov.

Gale has released an enhanced user experience for several resources to support accessibility standards, incorporate customer feedback, and promote user success. As part of this project, product names have changed to help end-users identify the resources that best suit their research needs. For more information on these enhancements, visit the Product Enhancements page.

The new names and new icons for the NOVELny databases provided by Gale are available at the NOVELny Support page.

All product links are now automatically redirecting to shorter URLs utilizing the HTTPS protocol. Libraries that use proxy links or firewalls may need to update their existing URLs or update their domain exceptions. A list of domain exceptions and instructions on configuring proxy URLs can be found on the Technical Documents page of the support site.

In addition, as of July 26, General Reference Center Gold will be discontinued. Most of the content of the database will be available in General OneFile. Links to General Reference Center Gold will redirect to General OneFile until November, after which time the links will no longer work. If your library is using Gale Pages, the link to General Reference Center Gold will automatically be removed on July 26.

If you have any questions about the changes above please contact Gale at Gale.CustomerSuccess@cengage.com.
