The NYS Library's Regent Joseph E. Bowman Jr. Research Library was established by law in 1818, to collect, preserve, and make available materials that support NY State government work. The Library’s collections include over 20 million items, and are utilized by researchers on-site, online, and via interlibrary loan. On June 13, 2022, the Library was renamed to honor Dr. Joseph E. Bowman Jr., who served on the New York State Board of Regents from 2001 until 2010.
- The NYS Library's hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 am–5 pm. We're closed Saturdays, Sundays, and all state-observed holidays.

Manuscripts and Special Collections
These collections include some of New York's documentary treasures relating the history of New York State from the 17th century to the present. They provide insight into many topics related to American history, literature, science and the arts.

- Ask a Librarian about the types of materials that may be relevant to your research.
- Request that materials be retrieved in advance and put on reserve so that they are ready for use upon your arrival.
- Check information about available parking, alternate transportation, and directions.
