Historical Note:

Daniel D. Tompkins served as governor of New York State from July 1, 1807, to February 24, 1817.  Governor Tompkins, who served as governor during the War of 1812, played an important role in re-organizing the state militia and promoted the formation of a standing state military force based on select conscription.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of official copies of certificates of appointments issued to individuals who were commissioned as officers in New York State militia regiments between 1809 and 1816.  Each certificate is signed by Governor Daniel D. Tompkins.  They are arranged alphabetically by name of appointee.
