Biographical Note:
Alice Hudson was born on October 30, 1922, in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Harry Francis Hudson (1877-1963) and Alice (Lockwood) Hudson (1882-1976). Her childhood was spent in Orchard Park, New York, with her older sister, Sarah (aka Sally, 1916-1988), where she was known affectionately as "Kiko." She attended Antioch College in Ohio, graduated from the Albright Art School in Buffalo, New York, and received a bachelor of science degree in art education from Buffalo College for Teachers.
Alice married Clement (Clem) A. Herman, Jr., of Williston Park, Nassau County, New York, in 1943. Clem was born in1923, served in the U.S. Marine Corps in WWII and Korea, becoming a major. He died in 1990 and is buried in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, New York. The couple's daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Bronson, was born in 1946.
In 1947 she moved with her husband and daughter to Long Island where she continued her studies at Hofstra University and at Southampton College. It was at this time Alice began working in papier-mâché and with fibers, and stitching small figures. Alice taught art in North Country Elementary School, Stony Brook, New York. She was affiliated with the Art Barn Ltd. in Stony Brook, where she taught classes for children and exhibited her work in Art Barn exhibits and at the Gallery North in Setauket, New York. She also taught children's art classes at the Museum of Stony Brook.
Following her divorce, Hudson moved to Norwich, New York, in 1983 to be near her sister. She continued to work with papier-mâché, fibers and other natural materials right up until the day of her death, March 21, 2013.
Alice Hudson's work was shown at Gallery North on Long Island, Gallery 53 in Cooperstown, New York, and the Chenango County Council of the Arts Gallery in Norwich. In addition to her many works in private collections, she is represented in the permanent collections of two museums: "The Cultural Center with the Mysterious Locked Room" was acquired by the Museum of the City of New York, and "A Palace for Wednesday" was acquired by the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, California. Scope and Content Note:
These papers are organized into four series documenting chiefly the artistic endeavors of Alice Hudson. The first series documents her personal and artistic life. The second series contains family papers, primarily of her father, Harry Francis Hudson, and her uncle, Chauncey Hudson, who were prominent architects in Buffalo, New York. The third series documents the artist's work, with a number of files related to "A Palace for Wednesday," "The Cultural Center with the Mysterious Locked Room," and "The Procession." The fourth series consists of oversize items. The papers include correspondence, biographic material, artist's notes, published material, photographs and slides; a video recording; scrapbook pages, and photograph albums.
Series I: Personal Files

This series documents the personal and artistic life of Alice Hudson. It includes correspondence of family and friends; childhood writings; scrapbook pages; photographic portraits; biographical sketches; black-and-white and color photographs and slides of family, friends and homes.
Series II: Family Papers: Levi Bronson, Harry Francis Hudson, and Chauncey Hudson

The correspondence, photographs, copies of letters patents (1865-1898), and clippings in this series document the work of the artist's grandfather, Levi Bronson (1828-1921) of Buffalo, New York. Affiliated with the Buffalo Pitts [Agricultural] Iron Works, he held patents for his inventions including a combined harvesting machine, the Bronson Harvester, the Bronson Thresher, a separator, and improvements in "shaft-couplings" and "horsepower."
This series also contains the correspondence, architectural drawings, plot and floor plans, prints, catalogs, articles, and photographs that document the life and career of the artist's father Harry Francis Hudson (1877-1963) and her uncle Chauncey Hudson, (1888-1971). Their firm, Hudson & Hudson Architects, designed residential, industrial, and commercial buildings; lodges; a children's home; a women's residence; and schools in the Buffalo, New York, area; and the Pike Building at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
Alice's parents, Harry and Alice Hudson, purchased "Freeman's Farm" in Orchard Park, New York, in the early 1920s, remodeling the historic main house and building several more. This is where Alice Hudson grew up. This series contains historical material about the Orchard Park area and the "Freeman-Browning House" there.
Series III: Documentation of the Artist's Work

This series, made up primarily of photographic images, documents Hudson's body of work from her early career on Long Island, New York, (1960-1983) to her later work created while she was living in Norwich, New York (1983-2013).
Some of the images were titled, dated and organized by the artist, and some were in envelopes marked with titles. Wherever possible these have been retained and are denoted by the use of quotation marks in the folder descriptions. Many images were untitled and undated. There is considerable duplication of the images in this collection, with multiple copies and/or enlargements of the same image.
Sub-Series 1: Photo-documentation

This sub-series is made up of negatives, slides, 3.5 in. x 5 in. and 4 in. x 6 in. prints, 8½ in. x 11 in. enlargements, photocopies and photo album pages that document in color and black and white Hudson's body of work. Art images in Boxes 4-7 are organized alphabetically by subject, such as "Flight," "Fourth of July," "Halloween", "Puppets," and "Wrapped images." Photos and slides in Boxes 8 and 16 are organized chronologically.
Sub-Series 2: Printed documentation

This sub-series contains reviews of gallery exhibitions, flyers, invitations, photographs, correspondence, scrapbook pages, articles, clippings, and records of purchased artwork.
Sub-Series 3: "A Palace for Wednesday"

This series contains reviews and articles; correspondence with museum curators; video documentation; scrapbook pages; and 8.5 in. x 11 in. color photocopies, 3.5 in. x 5 in. and 4 in. x 6 in. color prints and color slides relating to "A Palace for Wednesday," Hudson's five-foot-high chef d'oeuvre. "A Palace for Wednesday" was exhibited in the Museum of the City of New York from 1982 to 1997, and then purchased by the Mingei International Museum (folk art, craft and design), San Diego, California, where it is on permanent display. The museum created a video documentation of the piece in 1999, and later published a book dedicated to the piece, entitled A Palace for Wednesday, in 2008. Both are included in this series.
Sub-Series 4: "The Cultural Center with the Mysterious Locked Room"

This series contains artist's notes, correspondence with museum curators; description of each figure; video documentation; 8½ in. x 11 in. color photocopies, 3.5 in. x 5 in. and 4 in. x 6 in. color prints and color slides (see Box 16 for slides) which document the creation and exhibition of "The Cultural Center." The piece, a monumental installation embedded with creatures, and teeming with stories and clues to solve the mystery of the locked room, was purchased by the Museum of the City of New York in 1998.
Sub-Series 5: "The Procession"
Date: 1982 - 2009

This series contains artist's notes, correspondence with museum curators and fans; description of each figure; video documentation, flyers, posters, reviews; and 8½ in. x 11 in. and 3½ in. x 5 in. and 4 in. x 6 in. color prints which relate to the creation and exhibition Hudson's final major work, "The Procession," a 16-foot-long parade of imaginative fantasy characters led by a dragon. The wondrous procession also includes a party of royals and their train bearer; trades people, including a wheelwright, upholsterer, shepherdess, undertaker, roustabouts, an insect walker, and a dragon trainer; performers (jugglers, musicians, puppeteers, and dancers), an ogre, witch, robbers and a pickpocket. An exhibition of this work was originally mounted at the Chenango County Council of the Arts Gallery, Norwich, New York, in May 2000.
