Biographical Note
The Hokes are an African-American family who lived in Canajoharie, N.Y. during the period of the collection, from 1870-1956. Chester Bromley Hoke, 1847-1913, was a Civil War soldier and longtime member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), an organization of Civil War veterans. Chester, who was known chiefly by his middle name of Bromley or Brom, served in the Civil War from April 1863 to June 1865 as a private in Company G of the much decorated 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, an African-American regiment. After the war, he became a porter at the Hotel Mohawk in Canajoharie. His wife, Elizabeth Ann Phillips Hoke, born in 1860, who was known as Lizzie, married Chester in 1893 in Canajoharie. At the time, she was 33 years old and he was 46. Elizabeth worked as a servant in the Canajoharie household of William J. Arkell, a newspaper publisher and the brother of the founder of the Beach-Nut Packing Company. The papers reflect Chester Bromley Hoke's activities as a Civil War veteran and member of the G.A.R., his engagement and marriage to Elizabeth Ann Phillips, and their subsequent family life in Canajoharie. The couple had three sons, Chester, Philip, and Robert, and Chester may have had another daughter, Mabelle Hoke Dukins. (Her letter to the Commander of the G.A.R. post calls Chester "my father" [quotation marks in original]) It is clear from the papers, especially correspondence relating to bills due and letters concerning the estate of Elizabeth's aunt, that the family often was concerned about inadequate finances.
The collection also includes a few papers relating to other family members, including the father of Elizabeth, Philip Phillips, who died in 1881; Eunice Phillips [relationship to Elizabeth unknown]; Robert J. Hoke, the son of Elizabeth and Chester; Mabelle Hoke Dukins, daughter of Chester; and Eveline Harris, 1815-1898, an aunt of Elizabeth Hoke from Saratoga Springs, N.Y. who lived in her later years with Elizabeth and Chester.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists primarily of the personal papers of Chester Bromley Hoke (Bromley Hoke) and his wife, Elizabeth Phillips Hoke (Lizzie Hoke), as well as a limited number of papers from other family members. The papers include family correspondence, financial records and receipts, photographs (including tin types, cartes-de-viste and cabinet cards), portraits, newspaper clippings, bound volumes, and a few physical artifacts, all spanning the years 1870-1956, with the bulk of the papers dating from 1890 to 1920. Physical artifacts include Chester Hoke's G.A.R. medals, Elizabeth Hoke's thimble, a miniature sword chain fob, a long-stemmed pipe and a leather change purse. The correspondence includes a series of love letters from Chester Bromley Hoke to his fiancée and later wife, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Phillips, letters to Lizzie Hoke from her children, a number of letters to Lizzie Hoke from various banks and insurance companies concerning the estate of her deceased aunt, Eveline Harris, as well as letters from various relatives and family friends. Among the financial papers are bills and receipts for the household, including coal, groceries, meat, boots and funeral services. The papers also include documents concerning Chester Bromley Hoke's Civil War service, including a testimonial from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and his subsequent involvement in the G.A.R. post in Canajoharie. Among the bound volumes is a family Bible. The significant collection of photographs includes tin types, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, portraits and snapshots. The bulk of the photographs are unidentified. Two portraits similarly are unidentified, although they appear to be of Chester Bromley Hoke and Elizabeth Hoke.
Arrangement
The papers are arranged into series by family member (Chester Bromley Hoke, Elizabeth Phillips Hoke, and Other Family) and by format (Artifacts, Photographs and Portraits, Publications, and Oversize: Broadside, Certificates, Clippings Collages, and Portraits). Within each series, materials are arranged into files by activity and subject and within folders chronologically by date.
