Scope and Content Note:

Illustration of Lake George with boats on the water
Roger's Slide at Lake George

The prints in this collection are copies of illustrations drawn by William H. Bartlett (1809-1854), a British landscape artist, and engraved by R. Wallis, J. Cousen, J.T. Willmore, R. Brandard, G.K. Richardson, and others. Bartlett drew the scenes during trips to the United States.

Many of the prints were published in American Scenery, or Land, Lake, and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature, with text by Nathaniel Parker Willis. (London: George Virtue, 26, Ivy Lane, 1840), 2 vol. (Volume 1 of the New York State Library's copy includes a portrait of Bartlett.)

There are duplicates of many of the images and there also are hand-colored copies of many of the prints. The collection does not include all the 119 illustrations in the book.

The subject matter is almost exclusively eastern United States landscapes, with most of them scenes of places in New York State; the imprints date between 1837 and 1842 inclusive.

Most, if not all, images measure 12 x 18 cm and generally are printed on sheets measuring 20 x 27 cm. Some sheets originally were in a book; the images on those pages measure the same as above but the sheets measure 17 x 25 cm.

Noteworthy is the number of images showing various forms of transportation, including sailboats, steamboats, canal boats and trains. There are a number of images of canals and locks near rivers and rapids. Many of the scenes of Niagara Falls include tourists.

Additional copies of five prints in this collection are in PRI4949.
