Biographical Note:

Dr. Ronald F. Kingsley received a degree in biology and chemistry from Middlebury College (Vermont) in 1954. After two years at New York Medical College, he transferred to Syracuse University in 1958, where he obtained a master's degree in psychology. The following year he was awarded a Ph.D. in education from Syracuse University's School of Education. His professional career began at Kent State University where he taught in the education department from 1963 to 1990. During this time, he continued his education, receiving a dual master's degree in anthropology/archaeology and American history/American studies. In particular, his research interests were settlement and development of colonial North America; military history during the French and Indian War and American Revolution. From 1998 to 2014, he served as an adjunct professor at Schenectady County Community College in Schenectady, New York. Currently he volunteers as an archaeological site manager in Rotterdam, New York.

Between 1986 and 2014, Kingsley studied General John Burgoyne's campaign in 1777 at Fort Ticonderoga-Mount Independence with an emphasis on the Hessian troops enlisted to fight in the American Revolutionary War. This research, titled the German Auxiliaries Project, looked at archaeological evidence, examined military documents, analyzed the topography of the area, interviewed local property owners, and examined objects in collections to trace the encampment and movements of the German troops. His conclusions were published in such journals as the Journal of Vermont Archaeology, New York History and the Journal of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association.

Scope and Content Note:

The materials in this collection were donated by Dr. Ronald F. Kingsley to the New York State Library during the winter of 2016. The German Auxiliary Project, conducted by Dr. Kingsley, spans the years 1986-2014. This collection is broken down into twenty one series, many of which were titled by Dr. Kingsley himself and have been preserved so as to avoid organizational confusion. The materials found in the files are not originals, but rather photocopies. It is for this reason that the date ranges correspond to the timeline of the German Auxiliaries Project rather than the dates appearing on the photocopies.

Series 1 contains bound volumes that serve as records of transactions through the active years of the project. All chronological correspondence, artifact records, maps, and the like are contained in these boxes.

Series 2 and 3 contain general preparations for the closing of the project; much of this deals with the property owners of the work sites investigated by Dr. Kingsley and his team.

Series 4 and 5 consist of photographs and slides representing historical sites and military campaigns and provide a visual documentation of the German Auxiliaries Project; a large number of these photographs and slides pertain to the documentation of artifacts found.

Series 6 consists of bound volumes of supporting documents used throughout the German Auxiliaries Project.

Series 7 and Series 16 contain information on weapons, uniforms, and equipment used by soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Series 7 focuses on the Hessian troops, while Series 16 focuses on general weapons and equipment.

Series 8, the Kingsley-titled "Shelf Site" folder on Bridport Township, contains information on the individuals who lived in Bridport (Addison County, Vermont) during the eighteenth century. Kingsley created this subsection of his Bridport research because he had stumbled across individuals he deemed important to the shaping of Bridport as a significant township.

Series 9 through Series 12 contain research that is dually focused on the French and Native American populations in the mid-eighteenth century.

Series 13 and 21 contain maps used by Kingsley and his team. They include topographical and physical maps, focusing on Fort Ticonderoga and surrounding regions in New York, territories in Vermont, and maps of early roads and townships.

Series 14 contains annotated articles on various subjects.

Series 15 contains research on the Hessian-related skirmishes that pre-date the Revolutionary War and include journal entries and articles illustrating daily life during these skirmishes.

Series 17 is a Kingsley-titled "Military Storage and Docks of the 18th Century" folder. Within this series are copies of correspondence regarding military operations and details of storehouses at the forts in question.

Series 18 through Series 20 are a bibliography of primary and secondary sources related to the German Auxiliaries Project.

The Special Collections and Archives department of Kent State University Library holds a series of papers related to archaeological research projects conducted by Ronald F. Kingsley from about 1986 to 2002 on early settlement and industrial development in the Western Reserve region in northeast Ohio.

These volumes contain documentation from the beginning of the German Auxiliary Project (GAP) to its conclusion. The majority of the material is correspondence between Dr. Ronald Kingsley and colleagues planning the scope of the GAP or discussing possible origins of artifacts. Also included are permissions signed by Dr. Kingsley and participating property owners. The last volumes, Appendices A-E, provide documentation of the materials involved in the project. Digital copies of all files are available on a compact disc in the inside of the back cover of each appendix.

Series 2: Preparations for Closing of German Auxiliaries Project

This series contains information related to the closing of the German Auxiliaries Project. All of the permissions that Dr. Kingsley required for use of artifacts found while excavating are present, along with corresponding property reports. Kingsley's correspondence with property owners and representatives from the Henry Sheldon Museum are enclosed. There are topographical and physical maps of the regions explored and survey studies. Miscellaneous documents are also included in this group as they provide historical background.

Series 3: Property Owners

These series contains folders made up of property owner information. The regions are labeled with the name of the individual on whose property artifacts were found. Included are maps of the archaeological sites and surrounding areas, release forms signed by each donor of the objects found, photographs of artifacts with descriptions, and a brief written description of the dig site and artifacts found. The archaeologist's comments are found in this section.

Series 5: Historical and Military Campaign Slides, 1989-2004

The first half of these slides focuses on the historical background of Fort Ticonderoga, with an emphasis on the geographical surroundings. Extensive documentation of artifacts discovered on the dig sites are juxtaposed to the dig sites themselves. The second section of these slides, more than half of the collection, is dedicated to military campaigns.

The articles in this series pertain to eighteenth-century German uniforms and equipment, centering on the design and manufacture of German uniforms but there also is material on German weapons. Included are copies of paintings by Charles MacKubin Lefferts and articles from journals describing life in the Hessian army.

Series 8: "Shelf Site"[Bridport Township (Vermont)] Research

Dr. Ronald Kingsley's self-titled "Shelf Site" refers to Bridport Township in Vermont, which was a name chosen because of the shelf-like appearance of the surrounding geography. This section illustrates the everyday lives of inhabitants of this region. A few of the properties currently occupied by families in Bridport were homes of historical importance in relation to the German Auxiliaries Project.

Series 9: Delaware People Research

Kingsley conducted in-depth research regarding the Lenape, also known as the Delaware people. In 1988 he held a symposium on the history and culture of the Lenape at Kent State University. Each folder in this series contains a chapter from this symposium highlighting a cultural feature of the Delaware people.

Series 11: French and Indian War

The series consists of journal entries authored by military personnel of the time. Much of the research focuses on the catastrophic British defeat against the French troops during the Battle of Carillon, also known as the 1758 Battle of Ticonderoga.

Series 12: Micmac Pipe Research

The information in this series is related to one of the artifacts that were found during the archaeological digs: a pipe later identified as belonging to the Micmac tribe. Documents compiled by Kingsley include research about the ceremonial significance of the Micmac pipe, spiritual connotations of these ceremonies, and legends associated with the Iroquois tribes of this region.

Series 13: German Auxiliaries Project Maps

The maps used in the German Auxiliaries Project seem to fall into several categories: topographical maps, physical maps, maps of townships, New York State maps (including Crown Point and Ticonderoga), Vermont state maps, and early roads. These maps were used throughout this project. Originals of most of the topographical maps are in the Oversized Maps series (Series 21).
