Biographical Note:

William Kincaid (1841-1897) was a graduate of Oberlin College (class of 1865) and later ordained as a minister with the Congregational Church. He held pastorates in Kansas and upstate New York for a number of years before taking a position with the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions in New York in 1888. He married Martha Chapman (1843-1913) in 1865, and they had three children: William Henry, Edgar Chapman, and Kate Janet.

Scope and Content Note:

These papers consist chiefly of diaries and journals kept by various members of the family of William and Martha Chapman Kincaid. The diaries of special interest include the one kept by William and Martha Chapman Kincaid detailing their travels in Europe from August 6 to October 10, 1892, and the diary of personal and family experiences kept sporadically by their son, William Henry Kincaid, from February 19, 1883, to September 4, 1891. During the time the younger Kincaid kept his diary, the family lived first in Spencerport, New York, then Oswego, New York, and lastly in Brooklyn, New York.
