Henry Stephens Randall, agriculturist, author, educator, politician and secretary of state for New York, was born May 3, 1811 at Brookfield, Madison County, New York. The eldest child of Roswell and Harriet (Stephens) Randall, he was descended from John Randall, the Puritan ancestor who died in Rhode Island about 1685. Henry Randall attended the Cortland and Geneva academies and graduated from Union College in 1830. He practiced politics and studied law, passing the bar in 1834.
On February 4, 1834, he married Jane Rebecca Polhemus at Auburn, New York. The couple had three sons and two daughters, three of whom survived their father.
Henry S. Randall was deeply interested in the constitutional and political history of the United States and the political activity of his time. He was a delegate to the national Democratic convention in 1835 and wrote articles for Democratic newspapers. He was also interested in education, serving as Cortland County's superintendent of schools from 1843 to 1847, and writing articles on educational subjects. In 1851 he was elected secretary of state of New York, a post that included acting as superintendent of public instruction. During his two-year tenure, 1852-1853, he helped create a separate state department of public instruction. In 1871, he was elected to the New York State Legislature and served as chairman on the committee on public education.
At the same time, Randall was keenly interested in agriculture, especially sheep farming. He published several books and numerous articles on agricultural subjects, including his much lauded article "Fine Wool Sheep Husbandry" in 1861. He became corresponding secretary for the New York State Agricultural Society and is said to have proposed the idea for the New York State Fair. His writings were widely read and cited.
The work Henry S. Randall is most noted for is his The Life of Thomas Jefferson, published in three volumes in 1858. He was able to obtain the Jefferson family's cooperation in this venture and had access to many family manuscripts and papers never before available. This biography was the standard work on Thomas Jefferson for many years.
Henry S. Randall died at home in Cortland, New York, after a long illness on August 14, 1876, at the age of 66. He is buried in Cortland Rural Cemetery in Cortland, alongside his wife who lived until 1903.
These papers consist chiefly of letters sent to Henry S. Randall. The topics include agriculture, education, history, government, politics and publishing. His list of correspondents reads like a "Who's Who" of the mid-nineteenth century:
In 1852 and 1853, while he was secretary of state, Randall seems to have put together a list of influential gentlemen to whom he sent the offer of a gift of The Documentary History of the State of New York, by E. B. O'Callaghan, published in 1849. Many of the letters to Randall from that time are letters of acknowledgment and thanks for the history, and in many cases is the only letter from that particular correspondent.
An interesting side note to these letters is that many of them refer to Randall's interest in obtaining autographs from historic and important persons. The letter written in 1885 by Mrs. Jane Randall to her son refers to having sold the autograph collection for $2000 (Folder 10, Item 6).
The collection also includes a few letters written by Henry Randall, either copies or drafts. There are also a few letters in his possession from and to other persons. There are a number of newspaper clippings of Randall's obituary as well as that of his son Henry P. Randall, who died in a carriage accident in 1872, at the age of 35.
