Historical Note

Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood, Inc. began in 1934 as a family planning clinic in the Mother's Health Center offices of Dr. Frances E. Vosburgh, and sponsored by the Albany Birth Control Committee. In 1938, the name was changed to the Albany Maternal Guidance Association and installed with a rotating board. In 1942, they removed to 20 Trinity Place, Albany, New York and severed their association from Albany Hospital and Trinity Institute under pressure by local Catholic leaders. The name of the organization was again changed in 1947 to Planned Parenthood Association of Albany, moving to their present location on Lark Street in 1964. As social mores and legislation changed, the services were expanded to include single women and minors, making it necessary to open branch clinics in outlying towns and counties.

Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood provides counseling, referrals, and examinations for contraception, abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, cancer prevention and infertility as well as for psycho-social concerns. The organization disseminates information on family planning through publications, a library and speaker's bureau.

Description of Papers

A collection of records documenting the activities of Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood primarily for the 1960s and 1970s, with some documents and correspondence on the history of the organization. The contents of the folders remain intact as created by UHPP. Patient files are not included in this collection.

The administrative series includes board members manuals, bylaws, policies, and recertification application and certificate.

There are folders on individual committees reflecting the administration and services offered by the organization to include bylaws, the clinic, family planning task force, education, facilities, finance, medical advisory, personnel and long range planning.

Correspondence covers the years 1974 to 1979 including endorsements for 1975 to 1984. Additional correspondence can be found throughout the collection.

Financial records include preliminary reports and correspondence along with final financial statements for the organization and affiliates. In addition, are documents on fund raising campaigns for 1968 through 1979.

The history series is a composite of written statements by volunteers, documents, correspondence, and news clippings covering the early years primarily, with drafts for the 50th anniversary in 1984.

There is a single folder on the operation and procedures for their library.

The meetings series is composed of annual meetings and reports and board meeting agendas and minutes, both of a preliminary nature and final, for the 1960s and 1970s.

There are samples of four newsletter titles published consecutively by the organization from 1971 to 1984.

The organizations series includes material on related organizations, family planning, public affairs office and Capital Area Family Resources, Inc. (CAFRI), for the 1970s.

Printed material includes clippings from newspapers for 1942 and for 1962 to 1979.

The programs and services series highlights some of the concerns of the organization such as abortion referrals, adult education, minor's rights, and comprehensive family planning services, (clinic), with accompanying clinic statistics.
