Biographical Note:

John Augustus Griswold was born on November 11, 1818, in Nassau, Rensselaer County, New York, the son of the Hon. Chester Griswold, who served as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1823, 1831, and 1835. John Griswold moved to Troy, New York, at age 17, where he lived with the family of his uncle, John Ellis Wool, received an education, and worked as a clerk at the hardware business of Messrs. Hart, Lesley & Warren. He married Elizabeth Hart, a daughter of prominent Troy merchant Richard P. Hart, and together they had six children. Griswold would later take his father-in-law's place as president of the Troy City Bank, and would become a prominent iron and steel manufacturer, businessman, and politician.

Griswold's political career took off when he was elected mayor of Troy as a Democrat in 1855. In 1857 he received the Democratic nomination for Congress, but was defeated by A.B. Olin. Griswold went on to serve as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1869. While in Congress, he served as a member of the Committee on Naval Affairs and as a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means. In 1868 he won the Republication nomination for governor of New York over Horace Greeley, but was unsuccessful in the election. A Democratic loyalist and Unionist, he voiced his support for the Civil War and took an active role in recruiting for the Griswold Light Cavalry and several other regiments. He also worked to address the draft riot mob in 1863.

After his time in Congress, Griswold declined to run for office again, instead focusing on his involvement in the developing iron and steel industries. Alongside iron industrialist John F. Winslow, Griswold worked to secure a contract for the construction of the U.S.S. Monitor, the first iron-clad steamship commissioned by the Union Navy, according to a design by Swedish-born engineer John Ericsson. Griswold was also involved with the production of various other "Monitor" vessels, including the Dictator, Puritan, Passaic, Patapsco, Montauk, Sangamon, Kaatskill, and Lehigh.

Later, Griswold worked with John Winslow and Erastus Corning of Albany, and engineer Alexander Holley, to negotiate the purchase and transfer of Bessemer steel patents from England to the United States. The Bessemer steel plant opened in Troy in 1865, helping to establish Troy's position as a major steel manufacturer. Griswold organized the Pneumatic Steel Association and, in 1867, became head of Rensselaer Steel and Iron Works, a major U.S. supply center for steel rails and structural steel. Griswold also was involved in the developing railroad industry, serving as president of the Troy & Lansingburgh Railroad Co., the Troy & Cohoes Railroad Co., and the New Orleans, Mobile & Texas Railroad Co.

He took an interest in science and technology, and, as a trustee of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, led the reconstruction movement after the institute and parts of the city were destroyed by the Great Fire of 1862. He was elected a regent of the University of the State of New York in 1869. In 1870 Griswold hosted the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting in Troy.

On October 31, 1872, shortly after being diagnosed with liver disease, John A. Griswold died. Remarking upon his death, the Troy Times proclaimed: "The best, the most unselfish, the most enterprising, the most generous, the noblest of all our citizens has departed from among us." He was interred at Oakwood Cemetery in a mausoleum he had constructed for the Hart, Wool, and Griswold families.

Scope and Content Note:

The John A. Griswold Papers, 1848-1894, consist primarily of business and personal correspondence, invoices, and other papers related to Griswold as a private citizen, as the chief executive of Griswold Company, and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The papers are organized into 11 series, based on his activities and the form of the material, such as correspondence, bills and receipts, patents, and printed items. The material is arranged alphabetically within each series.

Early J.A. Griswold & Company invoices and correspondence indicate involvement with the cotton, worsteds, and carpeting industries. Later invoices and correspondence of the Griswold Company reflect a shift in focus to iron and steel manufacturing work and involvement with constructing iron-clad vessels. While in Washington, D.C., Griswold received regular correspondence from building superintendent, George Babcock, with updates regarding business matters and operations at the rail mills. Letters from C.S. Bushnell discuss a contract with John Griswold and John F. Winslow for construction of warships. Gideon Welles, Secretary of the U.S. Navy, wrote to Griswold regarding the conflict between the Monitor and Merrimac, the success of the Monitor in rendering invaluable service to the country, and addressing John Ericsson's request for additional work added to the contract for the Dictator and Puritan. Invoices and other business records relate to the building of several ironclad vessels of war, including a collection of Harlan & Hollingsworth account statements, which details work contracted on the iron-clad vessel Patapsco.

Griswold's personal correspondence includes letters from prominent citizens of the day, including Erastus Corning, Albany mayor and businessman with whom Griswold collaborated on the Bessemer steel deal, discussing business matters and railroad stocks. There is also personal correspondence from John Ericsson, with whom Griswold collaborated on the Monitor and several other iron-clad vessels during the 1860s. Also of interest in Griswold's personal correspondence are letters from lawyer Benjamin Homer Hall relating to Civil War matters and a request to pass on papers to President Abraham Lincoln, referred to as "Father Abraham".

Papers in the Congressional correspondence series also relate to the events of the Civil War and to Griswold's role as a Congressman, including a report by Griswold relating to the work of the Special Committee on Invalid Pensioners.

Assorted printed materials in the collection include pamphlets describing Ericsson's iron-clad vessels, and a map of the New York Central Railroad.

Personal bills and receipts are primarily from the years 1869-1972, the last few years of Griswold's life, and provide some insight into the family's lifestyle. Many receipts are from Saratoga Springs, where Griswold rented property seasonally.

Documents related to the estate of J.A. Griswold are found in the correspondence of business associates. Additional material from the period following Griswold's death includes patents filed by John Wool Griswold and others, and cancelled checks of John Wool Griswold.
