Biographical Note:

Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont (1790-1838) established a prosperous mercantile firm engaged in international trade and commerce. After dissolving the firm, he turned to the acquisition and exploitation of land, buying up large tracts of land, one of which became most of Brooklyn Heights and Boerum Hill in New York City. He also acquired large tracts of land in Saint Lawrence and Franklin counties in northern New York State. Upon his death much of his property was bequeathed to his son, Henry Evelyn Pierepont (1808-1888).

Scope and Content Note:

This small collection of papers chiefly documents the landholdings of Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont and his heirs that were located in the Town of Pierrepont, St. Lawrence County, New York, and in the towns of Waverly and Dickinson in Franklin County, New York.

The collection contains maps, survey books, wills, and deeds to family-owned lands in Franklin and St. Lawrence counties, as well as letters from Jonathan Dayton concerning the purchase by Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont of 2,620 acres of Dayton's land in tract 3 of Macomb's purchase, and documents related to investments of Henry Evelyn Pierrepont, Jr., in the New York & Ottawa Railroad Company.

The collection also includes three bound letterpress copybooks of Henry Evelyn Pierrepont, Jr., covering the years 1878 to 1887. The first volume appears to contain correspondence related primarily to the operations to the mercantile business in Brooklyn, New York. The letters in the other two volumes concern primarily the management of Pierrepont's property in Saint Lawrence and Franklin counties. Many of the letters were addressed to E.W. Foster and F.M. Heath.
