Summer Reading Program

Program Overview

Summer Reading at New York Libraries aims to advance literacy and academic performance by engaging children and teens in reading during summer months. The program is run by the NYS Library’s Division of Library Development. As a member of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), the NYS Library provides access to CSLP yearly themes, slogans, and programming resources to help libraries across the state provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children, teens, and adults.

Summer Reading Programs work to foster a love of reading through public library programs and services and increase successful reading experiences through librarian-supported, self-selected, voluntary reading.

TBBL Resources for Summer Reading

The NYS Talking Book and Braille Library is proud to participate in Summer Reading at New York Libraries. Each year, TBBL staff compile book lists for all ages that reflect the Summer Reading theme and slogan.

To order titles, you may contact our library, request books through the online catalog, or download titles instantly through BARD. If you do not have a BARD account, please visit our BARD registration page to get started.

Additionally, TBBL patrons may choose to participate in Summer Reading activities hosted by the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled. These programs are largely online, and feature book talks, virtual tours, and more.

Local Libraries

Check with your local public library about Summer Reading programming! Many libraries offer in-person and virtual programs celebrating the Summer Reading themes. Ask about registering for your library’s Summer Reading Program to track your reading and participate in themed events and challenges.

Many libraries across New York State partner with Hunger Solutions New York to offer summer meals, as well.
