An exact facsimile of a letter written in 1627 by Pieter Schaghen, the representative of the States General in the Assembly of the West India Company, detailing the purchase of Manhattes (Manhattan) Island for the value of 60 guilders. The original document is held by the Nationaal Archief (National Archives) in Den Haag (The Hague), Netherlands.
A gift to the New York State Library from the Director of the National Archives of the Netherlands, the letter is printed on 300-year-old paper and is so authentic looking that it bears a stamp of clarification certifying that it is a facsimile and not the original document.
- Translation of the letter (English).
- A transcription and translation of the letter (Dutch and English) can also be found on the New Netherland Institute web site.
