Henry R. Wendell, 1784-1868, was an army officer, farmer, merchant, and tavern keeper of Niskayuna, New York.
He is the son of Robert H. Wendell (1760-1848) and Agnes Fonda Wendell (1760-1828), and was born in Schenectady, September 18, 1784. A graduate of Union College, Henry Wendell was commissioned as an ensign in the Sixth New York Militia Regiment of Infantry on January 3, 1812, and placed in charge of a recruiting office at Schenectady. In July 1812 he was ordered to close the recruiting station and join Captain George Nelson's company, which was then stationed with other troops at Greenbush. Soon after, the entire command was ordered to the Niagara frontier. Wendell served at Black Rock, Queenston, Lewiston, and Fort Niagara, and later at Plattsburgh and Sackett's Harbor. He was promoted to second lieutenant January 12, 1812 and to first lieutenant March 27, 1814. He stayed in the military until August 1815.
After the war Wendell lived for a time in Niskayuna, at Alexander's bridge, where he farmed and owned a store and tavern. On November 22, 1817, he married Parmela (Pamelia?) Perry, with whom he had four daughters. Parmela died December 18, 1870; Henry died on College Hill, at the Wendell homestead, March 13, 1868.

The Henry R. Wendell papers are a collection of records personally connected to Wendell and to Schenectady, New York, and vicinity. Included are correspondence, accounts, receipts, bonds, land titles, powers of attorney, petitions, wills and other legal documents.
Revolutionary War-related items include correspondence and receipts. Papers related to Wendell's War of 1812 military service with the Sixth Regiment (mainly Folders 36-48) include correspondence, medical and pension records, company requisitions and orders, inventories and receipts.
Other papers, apparently unrelated to Wendell, include documents on duels, dated 1813-1822 (Items, 268, 269, 279 and 647), which indicate the practice of dueling despite the fact it was illegal, and slave bills of sale which indicate slavery was legal in New York State at least through 1811. (Items 199-203)
Other items in the collection of particular note are the John Bradt accounts (Items 1-16), which provide a look at what was being bought and sold in the Hudson and Mohawk river valleys between 1761 and 1776; the accounts (Items 35-36) of Henry Delmont, a farmer, with Leger Van Santvoord, Jesse Peck, and John V. Voaght, which offer a picture of what articles of clothing and wooden and iron items Delmont needed between 1781 and 1807: great coats, waistcoats, leather breeches, overalls, and trousers; a coffin for his child, and a gate.
The land titles (Box 1, Folders 3-6) not only detail the specifications of the land being conveyed, but often provide information about the occupations and social status of the parties involved in the transactions. The lands that were being bought and sold were situated in various places in present-day Albany, Schenectady, Montgomery, and Saratoga counties in New York State. In addition, the collection includes two deeds with the Mohawk Indians (Items 225-226), dated 1730 and 1773.
There are several items related to children, including Items 92-95, which are lists of names of people invited to funerals of children between 1800 and 1806; a letter from Aaron Mattison (Item 113), dated Princeton, October 23, 1780, to his cousin, Abraham Delemont (Delemot) at the Normans Kill near Schenectady that includes an introduction of George Marchant, "a gramer master that has come from Princeton to keep the skool in Albany;" and three indentures for apprenticeship, two for training as carpenters and one as a "meniall servant." (Items 120-122)
One document provides a look at conditions in the jail at Albany on July 10, 1778. (Item 125) In the letter, George Mann petitions his friends: "By reason of the numbers confined with me, and the extreme heat we endure is become so loathsome that I am driven to the necessity of imploring the aid of my friends and countrymen to interpose in my behalf and procure my enlargement [sic]."
The collection includes numerous accounts and receipts that document the wide variety of goods and services that were bought, sold, and bartered at the time. In Box 2, Folder 23, there is a receipt in Dutch (Item 168); a 1768 receipt for 90 "beevers skins (Item 169a); a 1776 receipt for damage done to wheat by two horses (Item 173); a 1739 receipt for a "negro wensh" named Nan (Item 174); a 1776 receipt for using "my chair to Albany" (Item 174a); a 1776 receipt for purchase of "a small battoe [bateau]" (Item 176); a 1777 receipt for 221 pounds of lead (Item 176a); a running account kept by Arent Vedder for shoes and "mocasins" made or repaired for Hendrick Dellemont, members of his family [?] and his "Negro" between 1789 and 1791 (Item 186); and an 1842 receipt for a hat (Item 190).
Transportation and commerce in the first half of the nineteenth century is documented by licenses to Henry R. Wendell to run "a public inn or tavern" between 1822 and 1830 (Items 210-213); accounts and receipts of the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad Company, dated 1833 through 1834 (Items 214-217); records of the Troy and Schenectady Turnpike Company, 1832-1834 (Items 226a-228), and an 1831 stock certificate for the Albany and Schenectady Turnpike Company (Item 229).
The collection includes a wide array of legal papers such as the depositions of charges brought by and against women between 1818 and 1829 (Items 230-233); and the last wills and testaments of a number of individuals (Items 669-672).
The continuity of civic life is seen in the parchment document that includes the names of 111 men who took the oath of office of justice of the peace between 1778 and 1792 in Montgomery County and two similar documents (Items 251-253). Similarly the civic affairs of the community are documented in Schenectady School Rolls/Tax Assessment Lists. 1816, 1844, 1845, 1847, n.d. (Items 673-679).
Appended to this finding aid is a table of 11 items which were given to the New York State Library by Mrs. E.W. Crosby, through Dr. G.E. Gorham, July 26, 1912. The items in this table have been accessioned separately.
Also housed in the Manuscripts and Special Collections Unit of the New York State Library is Wendell's orderly book for 1814-1815 (Call number: BD14775). The circa-200-page volume contains true copies of general and special orders dispatched to Lieutenant Henry R. Wendell of the New York State Militia, Sixth Regiment of Infantry. The orders indicate his troops were originally garrisoned at Sackets Harbor, New York, but during the summer of 1814 the troops were transferred to Fort Moreau, near Plattsburgh, New York.
