Biographical Note:

Warren Cady Crane (ca. July 1842-April 23, 1934) was born in Granville, Massachusetts. He settled in New York City during the 1860s and embarked on a career in the wholesale dry goods business. He was an associate of Harris, Hartley & Co., and later a partner of Tefft, Weller & Co.

After retiring from business Warren Crane devoted himself to collecting old prints and historical autographs. His most important collections were of materials related to Napoleon, Lafayette, and Lincoln.  However, he also accumulated a large number of documents related to trade and commerce in colonial America and the early years of the United States.

Scope and Contents Note:

The collection consists of letters, documents and a few portraits representing important American and British historical figures including Lord Auckland, P.T. Barnum, Gen. John Burgoyne, King George III, Charles Kean, Florence Nightingale, Winfield Scott, Benjamin Silliman, and George Washington. The items are arranged alphabetically by author in two major groupings: Items 8815-8900 (A-F) and Items 8901-9064 (A-Z); 9065-9067 are out of order alphabetically.

Many of the documents appear to be related to trade and commerce between Great Britain and its North American colonies. In particular, there are a number of letters addressed to the London mercantile house of Storke & Gainsborough, dating from 1733 to 1737. Also, the collection includes a number of letters written in the 1730s by members of the Cuyler and Livingston families of Albany and New York City, providing a glimpse of commerce, including the fur trade, between New York, London, Amsterdam and the West Indies.

It also appears that a number of letters and documents relate to the business of land speculation in the early years of the United States, especially West Florida (Items 8827, 8852-8854, 8885, 8950, 9019, 9038, 9047, 9055).

Letters addressed to Mr. and/or Mrs. Grant Thorburn are quite numerous, too. Grant Thorburn was "the first seedsman of any consequence in America." (Dictionary of American Biography)

The remainder of letters and documents cover a wide array of topics related to the political, social, cultural, and religious history of the United States.

Items of special interest are a receipt for "23 barrels of whale oyle [whale oil]," Boston, Mass., September 17, 1694 (Item 8899); a permit to Joseph Wells, ship master of the schooner Industry, to unload and sell, Annapolis, Md., April 7, 1773 (Item 8995); a letter dated February 18, 1858, an envelope and a hymn card, all connected with John Miles, chaplain of the Boatmen's Bethel, Montgomery Street, Albany, New York.
