Biographical Note:

Nathan Sanford (1777-1838), was a lawyer and a politician. He served as United States Senator from New York State (1815-1821 and 1826-1831) and Chancellor of New York State (1823-1826). Robert Sanford (1831-1908) was the son of Nathan and Mary Buchanan Sanford (1800-1879), Nathan's third wife. He graduated from Union College (1858) and New York Law School (ca. 1860).

Scope and Content Note:

The collection includes diaries kept by Mary Buchanan Sanford and her son, Robert Sanford, detailing their personal and social life. Also included are registers of court cases (ca. 1799-1812) kept by Nathan Sanford, and a group of scrapbooks and photograph albums which appear to have been compiled by Henry Gansevoort Sanford and family from 1897 to 1919.

Provenance Note:

This collection also included a number of books and publications that were removed to be catalogued separately for the book collection of the New York State Library. A complete list of the titles with this collection is found in the accession file.

Related Collections:

An additional series of papers related to the Sanford family is held by this repository: Nathan Sanford Papers (SC14054). The collection consists chiefly of certificates, commissions, licenses, and diplomas related to the public and professional careers of Nathan Sanford (1777-1838) and his son, Edward (1805-1876), but does include four letters from Nathan to Edward.
