Biographical and Historical Note:

The Livingston family is descended from Robert Livingston (1654-1728) of Scotland, who settled in the Dutchess County, New York, area. He was granted a patent and his property became the Manor and Lordship of Livingston. Robert Livingston was a town clerk of Albany, New York, secretary for Indian affairs and a member of the New York Provincial Assembly.

Henry Livingston, Sr. (1714-1794) (Gilbert, Robert) was the Dutchess County Clerk from 1742 to 1789.

Henry Livingston, Jr. (1748-1828) (Henry Sr., Gilbert, Robert) was a major with the 3rd New York Regiment, serving in Canada in 1775. He was a surveyor and resided in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Henry Beekman Livingston (1750-1831) (Robert) of Rhinebeck, New York, was captain and later colonel of the 4th New York Regiment during the Revolution. He fought in Canada, Saratoga, Valley Forge, Monmouth, and Quaker Hill (Rhode Island).

Henry (Hendrick) Livingston (1752-1823) (Robert, Philip, Robert) resided at Livingston Manor, his father being the third and last Lord of the Manor. During the Revolution he was lieutenant colonel of the Manor Livingston Regiment, or 10th Regiment. He was at the Battle of Saratoga.

Henry Gilbert Livingston (1754-1817) (Robert, Gilbert, Robert) resided at "The Hill." He was a captain in the 1st Battalion of New York independents and was brigade major and aide-de-camp to Lord Sterling. He was in the Battle of Long Island.

Henry Brockholst Livingston (1757-1823) (William, Philip, Robert) was born in New York, the son of William Livingston, the governor of New Jersey from 1776 to 1789. He was a major of the 3rd New York Regiment, a secretary to Spanish ambassador John Jay, and a justice of the Supreme Court.

Henry Alexander Livingston (1776-1849) (John Henry, Henry, Sr., Gilbert, Robert).

Henry Wells Livingston (1778-?) (Henry Jr., Henry Sr., Gilbert, Robert). According to Florence Van Rensselaer (Livingston Family in America, 1949), Henry Wells Livingston died in his first year. The documents and letters in this collection seem to indicate that he survived and became a lawyer in 1800, residing in Utica, New York.

Scope and Content Note:

This is a collection of family papers and land records assembled from single accessions relating to eight Livingston family members named Henry. The items have been grouped by individual, as best as can be ascertained, by comparing signatures and content. The materials within those divisions have been arranged chronologically.

The materials consist primarily of correspondence, documents, field books and survey maps, with the primary topics being land titles and the Revolutionary War. Included among these are master rolls of the 4th New York Regiment under Colonel James Holmes for February 13, 1776, an orderly book of the 3rd New York Regiment (1780), and survey maps for portions of the Philipse Manor, the Booardus and Kierstead properties in Rhinebeck, New York, the Beverly Robinson property in Dutchess County, New York, and the Maria Whiley and other property in Clinton, Dutchess County, New York.
