Biographical Note

Gideon Lee was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, April 27, 1778, the son of Gideon Lee and Lucy Ward. After the death of his father, he first lived with an uncle, who was a farmer, and then was apprenticed to learn the tanning and shoemaking trades. He worked in that business in Worthington, Massachusetts; in Georgia; and in New York City, where for a time he was in partnership with Shepherd Knapp.

In 1807 Lee married Laura Buffington (1790-1818), with whom he had three surviving children: Lucy Ward Melvin (b. 1809), Laura Theresa (1813-1840), and Samuel Buffington (b. 1816). Lucy married Samuel Ward (d. 1879); Laura married Charles M. Leupp. Gideon married his second wife, Isabella [Isabel?] Williamson (b. 1800), in 1823; the two had four sons: Gideon (1824-1886), David (b. 1826), Charles Henry (1828-1831), and William Creighton (b. 1830).

Lee was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1822, served as a member of the New York City board of aldermen from 1828 to 1830, and was elected mayor of New York City in 1833; he declined to be a candidate for re-election. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Campbell P. White and served from November 4, 1835, to March 3, 1837; he was not a candidate for re-nomination in 1836. Gideon turned his business interests over to his son-in-law, Charles M. Leupp, in 1836; in 1839 Gideon retired and moved to Geneva, New York, where he died on August 21, 1841. He is interred in the Washington Street Cemetery
