21st Century New York State Documents Depository Program
Since the redesign of New York State Documents Depository Program in 1989, advances in technology have brought about changes that are not yet reflected in the Depository Manual. As a new edition of the Manual is drafted, many elements of 20th Century policy and practice need to be updated. A few of the most obvious are addressed here.
Types of Depositories
The role of the Research Depository Library needs clarification. The documents microfiche distributed to each Research Depository is still a valuable local resource, but the 1995 cessation of New York State documents microfiching and a present-day reliance on internet access have changed the scope of documents distribution.
Substitution of Library Materials
Permission is granted for depositories to substitute electronic editions for the equivalent paper (i.e. discard). It is expected that proper reference will be maintained to digital documents with bibliographic description and internet hyperlinks.
