Informational Videos Available for Loan

The following informational videos about blindness and learning disabilities are available for loan from our library.  Teachers may borrow them to use in a classroom setting or when working with students on units about diversity or blindness/visual impairments.

We have a limited number of copies of each video, and the standard loan period is 30 days. Please call or e-mail us to request any of the titles.

  1. Title: Follow My Leader

    The story of a young boy who must learn to cope with a handicap when he is permanently blinded by an exploding firecracker.

  2. Title: Into the Mainstream

    1988.  Los Angeles, Calif.:  Churchill Media.  Videorecording. 1 videocassette (27 min.) 

    Ivonne Mosquera, born in Venezuela, lost her sight before her second birthday and her family moved to the United States in 1979 to provide her with better educational opportunities.  This video shows Ivonne at nine and ten years of age as she copes with her routine of family, school, church, and mobility training, and demonstrates that, with few exceptions, she functions as well as a sighted child.

  3. Title: The New What do you do when you see a blind person?

    2000.  New York, NY: AFB Press. Videorecording.  1 videocassette (16 min.)

    Through the entertaining experiences of Mark Johnson, a computer programmer who is blind, and Dave Simon, a computer salesman who is not, this video demonstrates simple ways to provide assistance, if needed, to someone who is blind or visually impaired.

  4. Title:  Ennis' Gift:  A film about learning differences

    In this film you'll meet actors, scientists, business leaders, a polar explorer, a teacher and dozens of others, both children and adults, who have one thing in common:  they all have learning differences.  These individuals refused to be limited by their difficulties or defined by the labels that were assigned to them.  They, like Ennis William Cosby, found their gifts in their differences.

  5. Title:  Understanding Braille Literacy

    American Foundation for the Blind  1 Videocassette (25 min.)

    This lively 25-minute informational video covers all aspects of a  successful Braille education program.  Teachers of children who are blind or visually impaired and their students demonstrate how Braille is learned and used from preschool through high school and describe in their own words how Braille skills contribute to literacy, independence, mastery of academic skills, and successful education experiences in the regular classroom.  Parents, classroom teachers, and school administrators also speak out about the roles they play in fostering Braille literacy.  Understanding Braille Literacy also includes an entertaining animation sequence that demystifies Braille and demonstrates how the Braille code works and why it is a stepping stone to language and literacy just as print is.

  6. Title:  Understanding Learning Disabilities

    Children with learning disabilities are not mentally retarded. They are capable of learning as much as any normal child. In fact, the LD child is frequently of normal or even gifted intelligence. He just has to learn in a different way.

    We all have strengths and weaknesses.  What works best for you and what ways have you learned to compensate for weaknesses you may have?

    • Think about your own learning techniques, organizational and social skills.
    • How do you learn best?
    • Do you remember information longer when you’ve seen it written down or when you merely hear it?
    • Can you read a computer manual and fully understand it or do you need someone to go through the steps with you aloud?
    • Do you make lists of things you need to do or do you need a more concrete reminder like the old string tied around a finger?
    • How do you learn the names of people you meet?
    • Do you ever transpose a couple of numbers in a phone number?
    • Do you work best alone or in groups?
    • Are you usually more interested in getting the job done than if others in the group are happy?
