Who We Are

The New York State Library, a unit of the New York State Education Department, is the largest state library in the nation and the only state library to qualify for membership in the prestigious Association of Research Libraries. Established in 1818, the New York State Library is the third oldest state library in the nation--Pennsylvania's is the oldest (1816) and Ohio's is the second oldest (1817). The New York State Library serves the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the New York State government and the people of the State of New York. Its over 19 million-item collection includes books, journals, manuscripts, maps, microforms, Federal and New York State government documents and electronic databases. The Library has major holdings in education, New York history and culture, law, science, technology, medicine, standards and specifications, social sciences, government and genealogy. The New York State Library is located in Albany, the capital of the state of New York.
