A Royal Visit

The State Research Library was honored in September by a visit from Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima of the Netherlands to celebrate the 2009 Quadricentennial. The royal couple enjoyed a private tour of the 1609 exhibit with Dr. Charles Gehring and Dr. Janny Venema of the New Netherland Project where they viewed 17th century Dutch colonial documents from the Library's collections. Following the tour, the Dutch government presented a gift to support the ongoing work of the New Netherland Project and development of a New Netherland Research Center. The gift was presented by Minister for European Affairs and International Cultural Policy for the Netherlands Frans Timmermans.

Saturday Hours for 2010

Plans are underway to open the State Research Library on Saturdays beginning in 2010. Not since 1971, when Saturday hours were eliminated as a cost saving measure, has the Library been able to provide the public with access to the Library's vast collections, extensive database resources, and unparalleled staff expertise on weekends. Both the State Library and the State Archives are developing plans to open to the public on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Onsite public services will be essentially the same as during the week. Access to collections stored offsite or in the vault will require advance requests, and certain subject area specialists may not be available every Saturday. The opening on Saturdays will be announced sometime in 2010.

2009/10 Sources of Income

New York State Library
(Research Library, TBBL, and Library Development)

Pie chart showing that 70% of the Library's income comes from the State, 29% from federal sources, and 1% from other sources.

Does not include DRP midyear cuts.

The Research Library operated on a budget of approximately $12.5 million, including State and Federal monies. The Research Library’s main income source is the Cultural Education Account, which is based upon fees charged at the county level. This fund fluctuates year to year and contributed approximately $8.5 million in 2009 to Research Library personnel and operating expenses. The Library's 2009-10 budget was subject to the statewide Deficit Reduction Plan, accounting for over a 50% reduction in the NPS budget of the State Library. The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) provided a little over $3 million in federal support for Research Library staff and operations in 2009. Slightly less than $1 million comes from State General Funds.
