Twitter

Twitter is a micro-blogging service that has grown tremendously popular in the last two years. Twitter messages, or tweets as they are referred to by users, are limited to 140 characters. There is no charge to use Twitter, but you must set up an account and complete a profile. Once an account is set up, it is linked to a cell phone, web page or instant message program that allows people to send and receive messages. Government agencies are using Twitter for a variety of applications. New York State’s transportation and travel service, 511NY, recently introduced Twitter feeds for New York area subway lines and highways to alert commuters to traffic conditions and emergencies. The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services posts public health issues and alerts. The US Geological Survey twitters about climate change, natural disasters, and alternative energy. Agencies using Twitter point out it is not a replacement for traditional forms of communication, but it does provide another method to expedite information to the public.
