NOVEL Invitational Grants: Lessons Learned

The New York State Library allocated $1 million in Federal FY 2004 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds for an Invitational Grant Program focused on creating a broad and deep awareness and use of the New York Online Virtual Electronic Library (NOVEL) resources among New York's library staff and all New Yorkers. This program helped to achieve Goal 1 of New York's LSTA Five-Year Plan and its projected outputs and outcomes.

The primary purpose of this program was to provide increased training opportunities for library system and member library staff, students, faculty, businesspeople, media, the public and others in effectively using the statewide NOVEL databases and other electronic resources to meet information needs. Each project must have contained a training component. Just as important as providing training was the promotion of awareness and knowledge among New Yorkers of the availability of NOVEL databases and NOVEL training at their local library.

Grants were awarded to library systems only, based on a formula for each type of system. Projects funded under this program were in effect from September 1, 2004, to May 31, 2005.

The NOVEL Databases Program is supported by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds,
awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
