July 2001: Hudson River PCBs
If you live anywhere near the Hudson River, you were probably inundated in March and April with billboard messages, mailings, radio and TV commercials, and media coverage about dredging the Hudson River to clean up PCBs. If you are looking for some background information on the issue, or wondering what lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make the dredging recommendation in the first place, check out their Hudson River PCBs Web site. It provides information about the study the EPA conducted to determine how to address the PCB-contaminated sediments in the Upper Hudson River. (This study is often referred to as the "Reassessment", because the EPA is reassessing its interim decision, made in 1984, to take no action at that time to clean up the river.)
June 2001: Surf Your Watershed
According to the Surf Your Watershed site,
Watersheds are nature's way of dividing up the landscape. Rivers, lakes, estuaries, wetlands, streams, even the oceans can serve as catch basins for the land adjacent to them. Ground water aquifers serve the same purpose for the land above them. The actions of people who live within a watershed affect the health of the waters that drain into it.
From the Surf Your Watershed site (A service of the Environmental Protection Agency), you can locate your watershed; review the Index of Watershed Indicators to find out if a particular watershed is healthy or "ailing"; find local organizations working to protect and restore rivers, streams, wetlands, lakes, ground water, and estuaries; or search the Watershed Atlas for maps and other geo-spatial displays related to watershed protection and restoration. You can also add information to the site and participate in online discussions.

The Citizen Guide will help New Yorkers find answers to State-related questions, locate State services and access those services online. It brings together Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and links from across the State of New York and assembles them in one place. You can find short answers to common questions, plus links directly to State agency sites where you can find a lot more detail if you need it.
