Color Our Collections

The NYS Library is once again joining other libraries around the country and the world for #ColorOurCollections.

Originated by the library of the New York Academy of Medicine, #ColorOurCollections is "a week-long library & special collections coloring fest on social media" running February 5-9, 2018 that invites both children and adults to "explore, color and connect with libraries and their collections."

Where are the images from?

The ten images in our 2018 coloring book range from decorative arts to heraldry/genealogy to political cartoons from the struggle for women's suffrage. They represent different parts of our historical collections, including late 19th- and early 20th-century periodicals, newspapers and books, as well as more recent artwork (used with the artist's permission) from Manuscripts and Special Collections.

Can't get enough of coloring?

  • Download the NYS Library 2017 coloring book (PDF, 2.1 MB), which contains 13 images from early 20th-century women's magazines in our periodicals collection. They are a mix of advertising images, cartoons and article illustrations published between 1909 and 1921, including a few images related to two events commemorated in 2017: the struggle for women's suffrage, which was granted in NY in 1917, and the US entry into World War I, which also took place in 1917.
