EDUCATORS: SIX IDEAS TO GET STUDENTS READING THIS SUMMER

Help your students improve their skills by reading during the summer months.

  1. Encourage your students to get a library card at their local public library.   It’s free!

  2. Invite a public librarian to your class to introduce this year’s summer reading program and theme - Be Creative @ your library.

  3. Encourage your students to read for fun every day and share the books they’ve enjoyed.

  4. Talk to your students about what you’re reading and plan to read this summer.

  5. In your classroom: post a list of favorite books. Encourage students and parents to add their favorites.

  6. Connect with the local public library to ensure your students get the best possible summer reading experience.  Promote the program in the spring and complete follow-up activities in the fall.

Studies show that reading for fun is a powerful tool to increase reading comprehension, speed and vocabulary. Children who read during the summer maintain and advance their reading level.
