Highlights for the 2009 NYLA Annual Conference

  • NOVELNY (New York Online Virtual Electronic Library) Has New Databases! - Check out new databases freely available to New York libraries and residents. NOVELNY use continues to grow with 5,600 libraries participating statewide and over 35.5 million searches in 2009.
  • 2010 Statewide Summer Reading Program - "Make a Splash - Read" and "Make Waves @ Your Library" - New York has teamed up with 47 other states in the national Collaborative Summer Library Program. Visit the YSS table in the Exhibits to see the 2010 manual, and art work. While you are there, pick up free copies of "Explore NY/1609-2009" bookmarks.
  • Click On librarycareersny.org for Professional Development and More! - Do you need career information? Online graduate programs? Job listings, or opportunities for professional development? Take another look at librarycareersny.org. Click on the Calendar Menu to see upcoming training opportunities for library staff that are available across New York State.
  • Staying ahead of the curve in 2010 - FREE Teleconferences! - The 2009-2010 season of College of DuPage Teleconferences is freely available to all New York libraries and library staff - you can even view them from your desktop! The first of the series, entitled "Millennials in the Library”, will be Friday, November 13, at 12 noon.
  • Gates Foundation Grant 2009-2010 Initiatives - Opportunity Online Hardware Grant (363 participating libraries will receive funding to purchase 971 computers) and the Opportunity Online Broadband Grant Program (70 libraries will receive funding to upgrade their Internet connectivity to at least 1.5 MBPS) - www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/gateslib .
  • Partnerships for New York’s Cultural Heritage - The State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education (OCE) was awarded a "Connecting to Collections” statewide planning grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services in 2008. OCE and its partners, which include NYLA and the New York State Council on the Arts, among others, surveyed 4,000 cultural institutions including libraries to learn the risks to their collections. Survey results provide essential evidence to drive future planning, action, legislation and advocacy for preservation in New York. View the final report.
  • TBBL Digital Books And Players Have Arrived! - The Talking Book and Braille Library is now loaning digital books and players (www.nysl.nysed.gov/tbbl/). The new players are easier to operate, have much better sound quality, and allow eligible patrons to download books from a Library of Congress National Library Service website, thereby increasing customer access to a variety of titles.
