Bibliostat Connect Workshop, May 1, 2008

Produce Statistical Reports and Presentations

The New York State Library has scheduled a Bibliostat Connect software training workshop on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the Schenectady County Public Library. Public library system staff, and library directors and/or staff who prepare statistical reports, presentations to funding sources and public relations materials should attend the training workshop.

Informata.com developed Bibliostat Connect, a powerful web-based software program that lets users access and manipulate library-specific data. Bibliostat Connect has been customized for New York's public library data. Participants will learn how to access information about libraries in New York State. Users will have access to the latest national data from the Public Library Association's Public Library Data Service (PLDS), the National Center for Education Statistics' Federal State Cooperative System for Public Library Data (FSCS), and 16 years of data (1991-2006) from the Annual Report for Public and Association Libraries.

In addition, New York State’s Bibliostat Connect now includes a new U.S. Census data module.  Through this module, users will have free access to comparative statistics about libraries in New York State and across the country.  The Census module will allow users to identify peer communities based on key socio-economic measures including income, education, age, ethnicity and more.  It is the ultimate “apples to apples” comparison.  Users can start by viewing the detailed make-up of their community then let Connect find peer communities that match the criteria most valued to obtain a short list of libraries that work with similar populations to get a working comparison on any of hundreds of measures – all of which can be converted to charts, graphs and other presentation formats with the click of a mouse.
