Career plans in response to the question "Other than earning a Masters degree, what are your career and educational goals over the next five years?" are shown in this Appendix sorted by a) whether the student received a Making It REAL! scholarship from a University or a Teaching Library, and b) what their response was to the question "How likely do you think it would have been for you to attain your educational and career goals over the next five years if the Making It REAL! scholarship had not been available to you?" The responses to the second question are "Very Likely," "Likely," "Unlikely," and "Very Unlikely." The scholarship has a positive effect in relation to career plans for those students who answered "Unlikely" or "Very Unlikely". Some responses end abruptly because the students came to the end of the text box of the online survey before completing their thoughts. Everything not in boldface below is a direct quote and misspellings are in the originals.

Items in bold are the questions or responses as they appeared in the survey. Numbers are respondents (or if next to "Blank," non-respondents). Percentages are of 40 when given. Responses were copied into this document verbatim, including with spelling errors, but edited to remove identifying characteristics, such as library and city names, replaced with ellipses or glosses /placed within slashes/ or within brackets]. Some verbatim responses end abruptly because the person ran out of space in the computer text box. Items marked with * were required to be completed if one reached that page, but "yes/no" and other skip questions often took people around some pages without displaying them. Bold labels on the left margin of the page are page headings and showed up on the survey.

It is strictly a financial issue for me. I am already commited to EDUCATIONAL JUSTICE.
It would depend on the amount of the scholarship and how likely I feel that I would be able to secure empoloyment and keep that employment.
My family comes first. If by chance, my husband has to move out of the state for his job I would have to go with him.
My goal is to work as a school media specialist so for the most part, a longer time committment would have been acceptable. However, you never know what life has to offer you and to be able to make such a long-term committment could have scared me off.
My life situation. Growing up in a military family, I am accustomed to moving around and experiencing different parts of the country and world. More than 2 years might make me feel like I was 'stuck' and could not explore opportunities in other places.
Namely it would depend on the overall quality of work my experience, as well as the apparent ability to earn advancemements/ raises in that position.
Other factors would include my expectations of what I consider should be the direction that my carrer should take, and having the freedom to decide it. Also personal considerations, like being close, geographically to my family and friens etc.

Excellence of the School program. I really enjoy the instructors. They are very dedicated to the profession.
I choose University because of its nationwide ranking. I believe that a good education will give me a strong foundation. This in turn will allow me to put my best foot forward in the representation of my career.
I chose it because I received my bachelors from there and it is a good school to attend.
I chose because they offered courses that I felt would benefit me in my professional goals: metadata/advanced cataloging/digital libraries.
I chose U for three reasons, it is the rated third in the country for LIS, it is close by and it offered distance learning.
I chose to attend because of its proximity to my job and home. After classes in the evening, I can get home to my son in about 20 minutes. This is important during the week due to his homework schedule. Though he's in the 10th grade, I still feel
I chose University because I thought it was affordable and it was the closest location to my hometown of .
I have to work full-time and University offers the most flexible online program.
I know quite a few alumni of SU's MLIS program and they all expressed how valuable that education was to them. The main reason was my familiarity with the school and how it operates, especially since I am completing the degree online. I went to SU for my

Reputation, location.
Several factors including geographic location, word of mouth information, grants/scholarships(the most important factor).
U's reputation Distance Learning option with NYS mandates covered for certification. Friend who attended loved the program
The most important reason is that many librarians here went to the Y School and highly refer the Program. Other minor reasons are that it is fairly close to my home and work.
The only school in the area.
The Library Council selected X University as the Library School the selected scholarship winner would go to.
U is the closest school to my home that offers the program.

"Yes" have a Making It REAL! scholarship from a Teaching Library. 6 responses
/Note: Students only reached this page if they answered question 28 "Yes." Since students apparently did not understand what a "Teaching Library" is, some of the 15 students who did have Teaching Library scholarships never saw the page and some who did not have Teaching Library scholarships mistakenly answered "Yes" and responded to questions on this page. The results are therefore not reliable, as can be seen by looking at some of them, and are only reported here for completeness./
28.a. * If you accepted a Making It REAL! Scholarship from a Teaching Library, why did you apply for one at that Teaching Library? Of all the reasons you give below, what was the single most important factor? 6 responses
Better training
I applied to this school mainly because of convenience and distance to my house and work. But the most important factor was that so many librarians told me that the / a partner library school/ School has such a great program
I only appied from /a partner library school/. Maybe I don't understand question...
Most important: /specialty library/ at PL was a desirable place to work. Other factors: It was the only Public Library offering a scholarship for YA services. It was the only Teaching Library I knew about. I was already working at the T
My local library system was a teaching library.
The teaching library is my current place of employment. I will be in close proximity to those who would be able to answer questions about the grant if they arise.

29.a. For each type of experience that you checked "yes" on Question 28.a., please describe the type of experience that you expect to get and specify where you expect to get it. 28 responses
/Note: Question 29.a. should have referred to checking "yes" on Question 29 instead of Question 28.a. Despite the mistake of the survey authors, students appear to have interpreted the sense of the question correctly, since only six students had gone by Question 28.a. to get to this page, 28 students gave substantive responses and Question 29 was meant to apply to both Teaching Library and University Award recipients. The results are provided in Appendix C of the report, sorted by University Award and Teaching Library Award recipients./

I think going this year would be too much to handle since it will be the mid-point of my first semester. I had attended last year and plan on attending the conference in 2006.
If I had known earlier the date of the conference, I would have arranged my vacation time accordingly. With this in mind, I should be able to attend the conference next year.
