"Staying Connected" Grant Program

The Staying Connected Grant Program represents a new and final component of Gates Library Partnership Grants. The goal and focus of the Staying Connected Grant Program is sustainability. The four grant categories are designed to provide the state library agency with the opportunity to leverage the foundation's previous grants to public libraries and to strengthen the state library agency's position in promoting on-going support for the sustainability of public access computing in libraries.

Staying Connected Grant Program awards are dependent upon state library agency matching funds.

  1. Public Access Computer Upgrade or Replacement. The goal of these matching grant funds is to provide upgrades and/or replacements of public access computers to libraries serving communities of persistent poverty. Branch libraries in The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library and Buffalo and Erie County Public Library are eligible to receive funding in this category.

Maximum matching grant funds available to the New York State Library in this category - $85,200
Application from the New York State Library due no later than August 15, 2003

  2. Broadband Connectivity Upgrade. The goal of these matching grant funds is to support the state library agency in providing broadband Internet connectivity to public libraries. Broadband connectivity is defined as any dedicated or "always-on' connection enabling 200Kbps or greater symmetrical connections. Grant funds in this category may be used for upgrades in individual library systems to connect to a private Internet service provider (ISP), or to complete library building or system connectivity to a state network.

Maximum grant funds available to the New York State Library in this category - $234,000
Application from the New York State Library due no later than August 15, 2004

  3. Training Sustainability. The goal of these matching grant funds is to support the state library agency in the development of public access computing training programs for their state's public libraries.

Maximum grant funds available to the New York State Library in this category - $137,440
Application from the New York State Library due no later than August 15, 2003

  4. Technical Support Sustainability. The goal of these matching grant funds is to support the state library agency's establishment or expansion of a technical support program, such as a help desk or dedicated staff function, to support public libraries in their state. NOTE: To qualify, the New York State Library will have to demonstrate that it has funds or budget commitments to continue these positions after the grant period has ended.

Maximum grant funds available to the New York State Library in this category - $60,000
Application from the New York State Library due no later than August 15, 2004
