Gates Library Grant Initiative; Opportunity Online Hardware Grant Program

Advocacy Workshops

It is a requirement of the Gates Opportunity Online Hardware grant program that all participating libraries send a staff member to an advocacy workshop during the first year of the grant program.  Each library may send up to three staff members to these workshops.

The workshops are designed to provide librarians with the skills and resources necessary to seek increased funding, create community partnerships, and build alliances.

Workshops will be offered as either onsite or online training sessions and will be locally customized training.  They will be offered in multiple places in New York State.  The American Library Association’s Public Library Association (PLA) will conduct the workshops.  Each workshop participant will receive PLA's "Libraries Prosper with Passion, Purpose, and Persuasion: A PLA Toolkit for Success," containing instructions for implementing advocacy plans as well as access to an online community.

All travel costs incurred to attend the workshops will be covered by the grant program.

The regional workshop schedule appears below.

The Sagamore on Lake George

This two-day intensive, professional development opportunity will provide you with the training, tools and confidence you need to be a powerful advocate for your library. This exciting event will feature special speakers and experts, field trips, and tons of creative tips and ideas to share!

A welcome reception will take place at 6:00 PM on April 6th or April 9th at the hotel.

Turning the Page is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is a requirement of the Opportunity Online Hardware Grants program. PLA and the Foundation invite you to send up to three representatives from your library system to the event. We recommend bringing library staff and one community leader, such as a library trustee or other community member, to participate in this special opportunity.

All participant travel, hotel and meal expenses are covered by the PLA/Gates grant.

If you have any questions, please contact the Public Library Association at sls@ala.org.
