Brief project description:
In an effort to educate the public about ADHD, a series of five programs featuring guest speakers were presented at the five participating libraries; additional books and materials were purchased and a network of support and services for ADHD families was established.
Needs addressed:
School district reported that 5% of local school population had been diagnosed with ADHD. This resulted in a tremendous demand for information from caregivers, counselors, educators and families.
Target audience:
Families, educators, counselors and caregivers for adults and children diagnosed with ADHD within the service areas of the five libraries participating in the project.
Community partners and their roles:
- CEF Library System provided information, technical assistance and delivery service between the participating libraries.
- Peru Free Library coordinated planning sessions; hired presenters and project staff; coordinated publicity; completed all reports.
- Dodge Library, West Chazy, the Keesville Free Library, Chazy Public Library, Plattsburgh Public Library participated in planning sessions; selected and processed materials; coordinated local project promotion; established parent resource centers in their libraries.
- Parent and Parent Support Groups served on planning team; assisted with publicity; made recommendations for materials purchase.
- Peru Central School Provided statistical information and insights into ADHD, moderated a question and answer session for one program.
- Human Service Agencies made agency contacts; disseminated publicity to clients; volunteered at workshop sessions; made suggestions for materials purchase.
Specific activities:
- Current ADHD materials were selected and processed by participating libraries
- An extensive publicity campaign was directed at reaching families with children diagnosed with or suspected of having ADHD
- Five program sessions featuring guest speakers were presented
- Network of support and services for ADHD families developed with libraries serving as centers of community referral activities
Staffing:
- Library Staff Peru Free Library: 20 hours / month; Plattsburgh Public Library: 2 hours / x 2 staff; Partner Library Directors: 10% total work time
- Project Staff 20 hours / month x 2 consultants during project year
- Volunteers 160 hours
- Cooperating Agencies 20 hours

Evaluation:
- Quantitative Measures circulation statistics, program attendance, number of referrals made to various agencies
- Qualitative Measures User surveys, evaluations of programs
Changes/recommendations:
- All project materials should be ordered early to insure materials be available throughout the project year
- Programs had to be scheduled around the unpredictable weather in the North Country (November March) which affected attendance.
