Brief project description:
A collection of 130 circulating reading kits was assembled to help parents address the reading needs of their children ages pre-school to sixth grade.
Needs addressed:
To promote reading as an activity that could be shared by children and their parents
Target audience:
Economically disadvantaged families in the rural communities of Cairo, Greenville and Windham
Community partners and their roles:
- Mid-Hudson Library System acted as consultants during the planning stage.
- Head Start in Cairo, Greenville and Windham acted as consultants in the planning stage, participants in the project activities and sources of data in the evaluation stage
- PTAs in each school district acted as consultants during the planning stage
- Greene County residents acted as participants in the project activities and sources of data in the evaluation stage.
- Cairo, Greenville and Windham Libraries coordinated, researached, advised and promoted the program during the planning stage. They promoted, facilitated and manaaged the project activities and they compiled the data during the evaluation stage.
Specific activities:
- 130 reading kits were assembled, each containing a book and an unabridged audiotape. Kits for younger children also contained an educational toy.
- Kits were displayed at PARP kick-offs, open houses and at the libraries. Press releases were issued
- Each library had an open house to promote the reading kits which included a program by a local author
Staffing:
- Library staff worked a total of 204 hours on the project
- No project staff or volunteers wereused
- Cooperating agencies contributed 72 hours toward the project
Costs:
- Purchased Services Storyteller/Author - $906
- Materials and Supplies - $8,433
Evaluation:
- Quantitative number of kits assembled, circulations, number of materials distributed, attendance at library open houses.
- Qualitative comments made by users
Changes/recommendations:
- Hire project staff to help process kits for circulation
- Promote materials for older children more
