Edge Invitation; State Preview Program

Invitation to Public Libraries Selected to Participate in the Edge Initiative’s State Preview Program
June 2014

From: Bernard A. Margolis, State Librarian

To: Libraries Selected to Participate in the State Library preview of the Edge Initiative

We are happy to share that your library was selected by your library system to be a part of the New York State Library preview of the Edge Initiative.  [More information about Edge in New York, an Edge fact sheet, Edge benchmarks and a list of participating libraries in New York]

In case you are not familiar, Edge is a ground-breaking, national initiative that helps public libraries assess their current technology services and make improvements that will better serve their communities. This management and leadership tool will empower you to elevate your strategic planning, shape the future of your library, and communicate its value in building a strong community.

As a preview library, you will have the unique opportunity to participate in the program without any cost to you. You and your staff will receive training to help you apply the results of the Edge assessment and start you on the path to a comprehensive, strategic process for achieving measurable outcomes.

We are pleased to be partnering with the Edge team and your library system to offer this exciting program to your library, and we appreciate your time and attention to this important initiative.

We hope you will take part in this opportunity to lead the way for the future of libraries around the country. What are your next steps to preview the program?

  • Go to www.libraryedge.org and register for your Edge account by clicking on the SIGN UP button at the top right corner of the homepage.
  • Use the Assessment Workbook to help you mobilize staff and gather the data needed to complete the online assessment.
  • Complete the Edge online assessment by August 1.
  • Stay tuned for updates on training for you and your staff, communications tools, and more.

About the Edge Initiative

The Edge Initiative was developed by a coalition of leading library and local government organizations with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and led by the Urban Libraries Council. It was created with the vision that all people should have opportunities to enrich and improve their lives through open access to information, communication and technology services provided by public libraries.

To learn more about Edge, please visit www.libraryedge.org and watch the Edge Overview Webinar.

We will continue to share information with you and your library system in the coming weeks as you prepare to complete the assessment. Should you have any questions, please contact Amy Heebner, Library Development Specialist, New York State Library, at (518) 474-4883.
