Edge Initiative in New York
The Edge Initiative was developed by a coalition of leading library and local government organizations with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and led by the Urban Libraries Council.
Edge is a management and leadership tool that provides libraries with valuable data - from operations, partnerships and programming, to assessing how a library's community is benefitting from library technology services. By completing the Edge Assessment libraries will have access to rich data, four online training modules for library staff, customizable communications tools and a comprehensive list of recommendations and resources.
To date, New York libraries that were randomly selected by Edge have participated in the national sample. Once Edge has compiled the data for the national sample libraries around the country, the data will be available in Edge for comparison purposes. As of June 2014, an additional group of libraries, the State Library preview libraries, will begin taking the assessment. After the assessments are completed Edge will provide training to assist libraries in using their assessments to improve their technology services, assess their communities' needs, foster library leadership and strengthen library partnerships.
