2018 Summit

Ready to Read at New York Libraries logoThe New York State Library sponsored a successful full-day Ready to Read at New York Libraries Summit at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library on May 10, 2018. The event included 41 participants from public library systems and libraries, community organizations, and the State Library, with most of the program’s Training Cohort members in attendance.

The event was a follow up to the first Ready to Read Summit held in 2015, and the five train-the-trainer sessions conducted for the program’s Training Cohort members. Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education Mark Schaming opened the day with warm and welcoming remarks, and expressed appreciation to all those involved in Ready to Read and its positive, wide-reaching impact across the state.

Summit sessions built upon the existing Ready to Read curriculum, and encouraged participants to expand and improve current early learning services in new and exciting ways. Participants gained knowledge and skills in emerging early literacy trends and areas not yet covered through the program. Such well-received sessions included Keynote Speaker Dorothy Stoltz’s presentation on effectively using technology with young children and families, and Dr. Alissa Lange’s talk about infusing STEM learning through the Math and Science Story Time initiative.

A networking lunch with discussion questions encouraged dialogue at participant tables about the early literacy needs of today and how libraries and community organizations can continue to work together. Also discussed within the full summit attendee group after lunch was the future of Ready to Read. Through ongoing discussions in the form of a partnership building team, public libraries and their communities will determine what statewide support is needed going forward to ensure that New York State’s early literacy initiative remains active and growing.
