2003-2004 Discretionary Grant Awards

November 2003

New York State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries Janet M. Welch has announced 24 grants to libraries, historical societies and other organizations to preserve deteriorating library research materials. The grants, totaling $500,000 are part of a $2.24 million comprehensive, statewide program to preserve endangered materials important to the State.

The 2003 awards include projects that will preserve a number of collections of unique photographs, water-damaged journals, fashion illustrations and identification and documentation records. Examples of grants awarded this year are:

CHEMUNG COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY -- Preservation and Reformatting of Charles Van Aken Glass Plate Negatives -- $3,383 -- 90 glass plate negatives of Van Aken's photographs documenting the history of Chemung County in the early 20th century. The Society plans to create duplicate negatives, interpositives and prints in order to preserve these historical images.

FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY -- Conservation and Reformatting of 106 Illustrations from FIT's Frances Neady Collection -- $22,823 - 106 original high-quality fashion illustrations from the Frances Neady Collection. Illustrations will be documented, repaired, and remounted in order to preserve this collection.

HUNTER COLLEGE/CENTRO DE ESTUDIOS PUERTORRIQUENOS -- Puerto Ricans in New York: Preserving Identity -- $28,830 -- Collection of 30,000 application forms with supporting documents, known as Identification and Documentation Records, tracing the history of migrant Puerto Ricans to New York between 1930 - 1945. Records will be archived and preserved on microfilm.
