Conservation/Preservation Program2002-2003 Discretionary Grant Awards |

State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries Janet M. Welch has announced 34 grants to libraries, historical societies and other organization to preserve deteriorating library research materials. The grants, totaling $500,000 are part of a $2.24 million comprehensive, statewide program to preserve endangered materials important to the State.
The 2002 awards include projects that will preserve a number of collections of unique photographs, brittle newspapers and archives, scrapbooks and other activities. Examples of grants awarded this year are:
AMERICAN JEWISH JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE (JDC) -- Preservation Microfilming of Archival Collection -- $30,000 -- The "Counties and Regions" section of the Annotated Catalogue of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee 1933-1944 will be preserved on microfilm.
DEWITT HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF TOMPKINS COUNTY -- SCRAPBOOK COLLECTION STABILIZATION PROJECT -- $13,791 -- 432 scrapbooks documenting life and events in Tompkins County from the 19th -20th century will be repaired and re-housed in custom made phase boxes.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND ARCHIVES -- PRESERVING MONTGOMERY COUNTY'S PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY -- $3,039 -- 146 glass plate negatives created by local photographers and documenting building, people and events in Montgomery County. Interpositives, duplicate negatives and prints will be created to insure the preservation of these images.
ROCHESTER REGIONAL LIBRARY COUNCIL -- RELIEF FOR CAREGIVERS OF LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS -- $9,382 -- Seven workshops on the preservation of paper based collections will be offered. Topics to be covered are basic and preservation, disaster preparedness, and will include formats such as rare books, and manuscripts, audiotapes, and photographs.
The New York State Program for the Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials provides $500,000 each year for preserving materials in the collections of libraries archives, historical societies and similar agencies. There is strong competition for the $500,000. The maximum grant award is $30,000.
