State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries Janet M. Welch has announced grants to libraries, historical societies and other organizations to preserve deteriorating library research materials. The grants, totaling $500,000, are part of a $2.24 million comprehensive, statewide program to preserve endangered materials important to the State.
According to Barbara Lilley, Conservation/Preservation Program Officer in the New York State Library's Division of Library Development, the 2001 awards include projects that will preserve a number of collections of unique photographs, brittle newspapers and archives, architectural drawings, scrapbooks and other activities. Examples of grants awarded this year are:
AMHERST MUSEUM, Conservation Treatments of Aerial Photographs and Map, $7,305 -- A set of 200 aerial photographs and a corresponding map of the Town of Amherst dating from the 1940's will receive conservation treatment.
NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM, Collection Survey, $1,500 -- A general preservation survey of the library, archive, photograph and recorded media collections will be conducted. Materials in the collections include monographs, serials, scrapbooks, manuscript collections, photographs, slides, negative, film, video, recorded sound, news clippings, minor league contract cards and ephemera.
WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART, Preservation of Audio Archives, $30,000 -- Tapes from the Museum's Seminars with Artists program and other artist talks from the 1970's and 1980's will be preserved. The project will entail cleaning 200 original magnetic audio tapes and producing a preservation copy on reel-to-reel analog tape.
The New York State Program for the Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials provides $500,000 each year for preserving materials in the collections of libraries archives, historical societies and similar agencies. There is strong competition for the $500,000. The maximum grant award is $30,000.
