Information updated 11/20/06The Elting Memorial Library was originally constructed around 1800 as the Solomon Elting Homestead. It is an example of the Dutch stone vernacular architecture found in Ulster County especially on Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz, Hurley, and the stockade area of Kingston. The building was gifted to the community for a library in 1920. Additions were made to the library in 1962 and 1978. The library was placed on the National and State register of Historic places in 2004.
The library began a construction project, to build an addition and renovate the existing building, in January 2005. Actual construction began in late August, 2006. The project is staged and financed over five years with a completion date of 2010. All construction needs will be met upon completion of the project. Currently, the main entrance and many of the adult book shelves are not handicapped accessible. The Stevens Memorial Community Library is currently updating lighting fixtures in the original building and in the front addition. The fixtures are not energy efficient and have become brittle during the last 35 years. These lights will be new electronic starters and will be able to be duplicated for the long-range plan listed below. The library is also replacing the 18-year-old furnace that heats the back portion of the library making sure it will accommodate the planned long-range construction. The new energy efficient furnace will be installed to increase energy use with the other efficient furnace for the front of the building.
