Plainedge Public Library
The Plainedge Public Library (Nassau County), constructed in 1968, used its 2004-05 construction aid grant to replace a thirty-five-year-old asphalt tile floor on its entire lower level. The approximately 2,400 square foot area includes the community room, a long hallway, a large stairwell landing, and a small staff kitchen. Large areas of the old floor were extremely worn and some tiles, particularly in the community room, were separating from the concrete base. The cracked tiles in the hallway made it dangerous for some persons with physical disabilities to navigate. The new flooring is vinyl commercial composition tile.

The Library also recently completed construction of a concrete ramp and a redesigned concrete walkway to make entry into its building through both the side and front entrances easier and more accessible for its elderly patrons as well as those using wheelchairs or crutches. Prior to this construction, there was no proper ramp off the parking lot on the north side of the building and those using the handicapped parking spaces had to travel nearly 30 feet along the side of the parking lot to enter the building via an uneven, precarious front walkway. Construction aid funds were used to help pay for the rerouting and paving of the walkway.
