Longwood Public Library (Suffolk Co.)
The Longwood Public Library received $30,000 from the $14 Million Public Library Construction Grant Program construction for the replacement of the roof over the Community Room and the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on the new roof surface. The library wanted to improve energy conservation and set an example to the community of environmental responsibility. The construction of the roof included improved insulation to maintain internal temperatures and reduce heating and cooling losses. 55 photovoltaic panels were installed on the new portion of the roof, which are expected to provide over 11,000 watts of electricity, or an average of 20% annual energy savings. Not only does this project represent environmentally friendly practices, but also saves on energy costs, allowing more focus to placed library services and access for its community.
