Crandall Public Library, Glens Falls
Less than two months before a ballot referendum and capital campaign to support a long-overdue renovation, Crandall Public Library experienced a major failure of its 36-year-old steam boiler late in August 2005. Inspection by the insurance company's specialists declared that the library's boiler had deteriorated to the point that it was unsafe to operate and had to be removed and replaced. Emergency procedures were enacted to quickly replace the old boiler with a new one that is compatible with the steam pipe system still in place but can also be adapted for use in a hot water system the library anticipates installing in the foreseeable future as part of a large renovation project. Even still, the installation was not completed until the first week of December and the library had to close for three days because of the cold. The new boiler is operating at an 82% efficiency rate as compared to the old one that operated at a 35-40% rate. "The building is more comfortable than ever," writes the Director. Public library construction aid money was used to help pay for the boiler replacement.
