The New York State Legislature provided an appropriation of $14 million in capital funds for public library construction in the 2006-2007 State Budget. (These funds are separate from the annual $800,000 allocation for public library construction.) Libraries could apply for a construction grant that could fund up to 50 percent of a project. The minimum grant award was $2,500 (for a total project cost of $5,000 with matching funds from the library). The New York State Library awarded 201 Public Library Construction Grants to public libraries and public library systems.
