Instructions for Finding Information
in the "Visit the State Library's Web Site" Section of the Fall 2006 Issue

  1. Learn about online auctions. Check out a guide for Internet auction buyers and sellers.

    Go to Electronic Resources and click on Internet Bibliographies. From this list, select Government - Federal. Under the Federal Information - Guides/Databases heading, click 'U.S. Consumer Gateway'. Once you are at www.consumer.gov, click the Technology icon at the top of the webpage. Click on 'E-Commerce & Internet Publications'. Underneath Consumer Information, you will find the guide: 'Internet Auctions: A Guide for Buyer and Sellers'.

  2. Find generic drugs. Search the FDA-approved brand name and generic drug database.

    Go to Electronic Resources and click on Internet Bibliographies. From this list, select Health and Medicine – Drugs and Medicine. The title link is called Drugs@FDA.

  3. Reduce unwanted email. Read the Federal Trade Commission's tips for protecting yourself from "spam" .

    Go to Electronic Resources and click on Internet Bibliographies. From this list, select Government - Federal. Under the Federal Information - Guides/Databases heading, click 'U.S. Consumer Gateway'. Once you are at www.consumer.gov, click the Technology icon at the top of the webpage. Click the 'Spam E-mail' underneath the Technology heading. Click the 'Spam E-Mail' website. Once you are on the FTC's website, click the 'For Consumers' link.

  4. Eat well! Find out about New York State culinary itineraries and package tours.

    Go to Electronic Resources and click on Internet Bibliographies. From this list, select New York State – Cities and Regions. Under the heading Albany, select Absolutely Albany. On Absolutely Albany's website, there is a menu on the left handed side which lists restaurants, tours amongst other things.
