Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Art Books

October 2018

October's public-floor exhibit focused on art books, particularly the work of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters.

The Impressionists captured the passing glance and the momentary feel.  They often painted outside, focusing on light and color, and translated the mood of a time and place into lasting work.  They mainly painted around Paris in the 19th Century.  Monet and Renoir were some of the better-known Impressionists.

The Post-Impressionists' artwork derived from and reacted to Impressionism. They focused on the abstract and symbolic, though they did share traits with Impressionism, such as artificiality (both movements being a response to realism or naturalism).  They painted in the late 19th century and beyond. Seurat and van Gogh were some well-known Post-Impressionists.

The legacy of both movements is most significant, and the modern reader has the pleasure of enjoying them simultaneously.  The New York State Library holds an abundance of art books showcasing their works.
